Balloon Cup 2025 - Piacenza San Damiano, Italy

The Return of the "Gina": A Legendary Revival at the 2025 Balloon Cup

In September 2025, we attended the annual Balloon Cup Open Days at Piacenza San Damiano Air Base. The Sunday session featured a spectacular aerial program that showcased both the heritage and the modern capabilities of the Italian Air Force.

Aerial Display:
The flight display commenced with a precision performance by the Frecce Tricolori, Italy’s national aerobatic team, flying their signature ten-ship formation of MB-339 aircraft. This was followed by a SAR demonstration by an HH-139, which captivated the audience before the pace shifted to a historical tribute. A World War I heritage flight took to the skies, featuring impressive replicas of the Caproni Ca.3 and the SPAD S.XIII.

The “Formazione Legend” followed, a group established in 2015 to demonstrate the evolution of Italian Air Force trainer aircraft. Their diverse lineup included:
-Classic Trainers: North American T-6, FIAT G-46, and SIAI SF-260.
-Jet Heritage: Aermacchi MB-326E and MB-339.
-Modern Era: Alenia T-346 and Aermacchi T-345.

A significant highlight of the day was the return of “Gina”, the FIAT G-91R (I-AMIC). Restored to flying condition in 2023, this aircraft is a testament to Italian aviation preservation. For a deeper look at this restoration project and the history of the Frecce Tricolori, you can revisit our detailed coverage of the 2025 Rivolto Air Show.

Static Display:
The ground exhibition was equally impressive, headlined by a Eurofighter Typhoon from the 51st Wing based in Istrana and an Alenia T-346, from the 61st Wing in Lecce Galatina. Other notable inclusions were:
-Rotary & Utility: A Breda Nardi NH-500 and an Italian Navy Piaggio P.180 Avanti.
-Base Collection: Several aircraft from the local collection were on display, including four AMX International attackers, an Agusta-Bell 212AM, and a Panavia Tornado IDS featuring a striking 50th-anniversary special livery.

As seen in our recent Fly&Fun gallery, these displays offered a rare up-close look at decades of aeronautical engineering.
